The Archive of Significant Objects
Presented as part of the National Humanities Center's 2024 Being Human Festival, this public archive is a testament to our shared experiences of materials, objects, and things. The archive will be open to the public at In the Heart of the Beast Mask and Puppet Theater from April 24-28.
This project seeks to display and celebrate objects deemed significant by the object's owner. It is my invitation that we come together and examine the existence of these objects. Please submit your object to the archive!
A small ceramic house, around 2.5" tall. A gift from a friend, this object was purchased for 1000 yen from a vending machine maintained by seemingly no one on the friend's visit to Japan. The blue felt smoke appears to be die-cut and the house sits on its own dish. Though no party exchanging the object can read Japanese, the directions appear to ask the user to view the object as an "eco humidifier".
